5 Must Do’s for a Stay at Home Mom (or Dad) When the Kids are Back in School!

Stay at Home ParentsKids back at school?  Here are 5 Must Do items that any stay at home mom or stay at home dad should do.

Can you feel the excitement?  New shoes are tied, backpacks are zipped and your child’s name is written on all the school supplies.  It is the first day of school.  Everyone is “nervous-cited”. (Our family uses this word for situations that we are nervous yet excited about).

If you are a stay at home parent, you too may be feeling some of these same emotions.  Now that the kids are in school, what do you do?  Some may give the advice to go back to work, but you know that you still have a big job and you want to be there every morning to send your children off on the bus, yet be at home when they get back.

So what now?  It is time to spend some time focusing on you!

5 Tips to Taking Care of Yourself as a Stay at Home Mom or Stay at Home Dad

Do things you can’t do with kids around…and don’t feel guilty!

Let’s face it.  As parents we are pros at doing household chores such as laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc, with kids running around our feet.  Although it might be easier while they are away, this is your chance to actually do something you can’t do while they are around.  Think about what you love to do without interruptions and plan to get it done.  You will get the household chores done, eventually.

How to set goals, make a plan and work it.

Grab a cup of coffee

This is your chance to do something for you.  So grab a cup of coffee and either spend your time with a friend catching up, or just hang by yourself.  Both of these are ways to enjoy this newfound freedom, even if only for a short time.

Focus on Health

Your health!  Take time to go for a walk, or get yourself to the gym.  This is your time to finally focus on health without interruptions.  The best part?  You will feel better too, which will make the balance of family and home that much easier.

Make time for Personal Growth

Let’s face it.  When your kids are little, it is extremely hard to think about yourself, or what you want in life.  Now is the time to start exploring and find yourself a passion project.  Learn something new.  Meditate and reflect on your life.  This is your life, and when you are able to spend time on what you love, you will be able to give that much more to your family.

Make extra money- only if you want to!

Most people think that when your kids are in school, you need to go out and get a job.  Sometimes, this just isn’t logistically possible, if you still want to be there before and after school for your children.  But often times, a stay at home parent may want to find other ways to contribute.  If you are in this position, consider monetizing your passion project.  Many people have found great ways to make money at home even with limited hours.

Once those kids are in school, the years seem to fly by.  Know that stay at home parents often deal with many different emotions about when their kids are finally in school.  This is time for you to take care of yourself too.  Those dishes will always get done.
